Backward, flow backward, O tide of the years!

I am so weary of toil and of tears,

Toil without recompense, tears all in vain!

Take them, and give me my childhood again! …….. Elizabeth Akers Allen

Robin fell back against the tree. He was tired, so very tired. He exhaled a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding and stared up at the treetops. The cool breeze rustled the leaves that were silhouetted against the sky.

Sherwood...his Sherwood...his home. He had loved the forest since he was a boy. Even before he was sixteen, when he had carved the Locksley crest onto the trunk of a tree, this tree. He had explained to Marian that Locksley; the manor, the village, the wealth and the titles that were his would someday be hers when she was his wife. But now all that was left of the dreams and plans was this tree. Sovereigns of Sherwood as Allan had called the gang. Robin narrowed his eyes against the pain and he struggled to hold onto consciousness.

These past three years had been devoted to serving the poor. They had fought hard, selflessly and the tide had turned with the defeat of the sheriff. Robin had given up possessions, inheritance, his love and shortly now his life. But they had saved the King and Nottingham and England. Surely what he had lost was not worth more than that.

In these, his last moments, he had left his gang to be alone with his thoughts. He thought of Marian. What if he hadn’t gone away. What would it have been like if they had children and a home. They had lost all those years that they could have spent together.

Another searing pain wracked his body and ripped across his chest, was it just the poison or his broken heart? He missed her so much. They way she used to giggle when he tickled her with the fletching feathers he found in his pockets during church. The way she smiled but tried so hard not to while he teased her, The way her eyes sparked with fury when any of the peasants were mistreated. When she played with the curls at the nape of his neck as he kissed her. Her soft skin, her smell, her taste...he could almost feel her.

Then he looked up and he saw her. The breath caught in his throat. As he choked out her name he held back tears. “ Marian” . Was she really there? He smiled as he thought to himself... If there is a god and a heaven- then she is here. If there was a way for her to come for him ,then heaven help anyone that tried to prevent her. And then he heard her voice ….

{I have waited for you}
